Toe Nail Fungus

There are a number of treatments that could be applied for toenail fungus. The most effective way to treat this abnormality is with oral anti-fungal medications. These medications are expensive and they need to be taken once daily for 3 months which makes it difficult to continue this procedure. These medications are effective and there success rate is in the range 60% - 80%, but they can reoccur which has a chance of 15%. Some drugs are effective then the other but there are some side effects including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, rashes, headache, taste disturbances and dizziness. There are also several serious adverse events are though very rare, up to one for every 200 people but do include hepatitis and acute hepatic necrosis.

There are various other options besides the above anti-fungal treatment. Though there success rate is variable. Some studies have evaluated the success to be in the region of 60% but most studies show that to be about 10-15%. The thing in its advantage is that it has fewer chances of side effects then the oral procedure and Side effects occur in less than 2% of patients which include burning and redness around the nail. This medication is only available by prescription and it is also quite expensive. Expectations should not be high with these products, as there is never complete success but they can be useful to decrease the thickness and discoloration of the nail in some cases.

The other alternative for these procedure are many homemade remedies and also the products which do not need prescription. Some home remedies that can be used include bleach, tea tree oil, grape seed extract, and Vic’s Vapor Rub. With these home remedy or non-prescription topical, it should be understood that the effectiveness of these treatments is unconvincingly low, less than 10 per 100. The chances to success can be increased by continuing the process everyday regularly. Bleach can cause skin irritation and to some people it causes skin reactions. Also the Vic’s Vapor Rub. The advantage of these treatments is that they are very safe.

The best way to the treatment could be a combination of treatments which can help increase the effectiveness of the treatment. These can include an oral medication with a topical anti-fungal agent as well or a combination of any of the above mentioned treatments. You could also remove your nail. Once the nail is removed, reach the nail bed which is the effected and they become more effective. The nail takes a period of 8-10 months to grow. Permanent nail removal is also an option and it is very painful and is reserved for those with chronic ingrown nails, ulceration under the nails or pain from the fungal nails.
