Toenail fungus, or onychomycosis, is a common condition that spoils and sometimes even obliterates the nail. Toenail fungus affects 2 to 18 percent of all people on the planet. Children are rarely affected by it and it affects only about 1 out of every 200 children younger then 18 but as a person grows it is likely that Toenail fungus would come into play as Up to 48% of people have at least encountered this disease by the time they reach 70 years. The problem in treating this disease is most people treat it as cosmetic problem and not a medical disorder and don't bother seeking treatment.
The people who are most likely to encounter Toenail fungus are people who wear tight-fitting shoes are more likely to develop this problem, especially if they don’t take care of their foot hygiene. Wearing too much nail polish could also be a cause of toenail fungus because it doesn’t allow the nail to breathe. Of all the toenails, those on the big toe and little toe are the most likely to develop a toenail fungus. This is because these toes are constantly creating friction with the sides of shoes.
In a fungal infection, the toenail turns yellow or brown and becomes thick and overgrown and the pain kicks in. As the infection grows, the nail could either become weak and could eventually fall off or become very thick.
The following are some tips which if practiced would prevent Toenail Fungus.
- Wearing comfortable shoes and socks.
- Wash your feet every day ideally in the night before sleeping,
- Avoid wearing dirty socks and wear a fresh pair every day.
- Regularly trim your toenails.
- Sterilize pedicure tools before you use them.
Toenail fungus could be a nuisance but with proper care and hygiene it could be prevented.
