There are certain myths involving dandruff, like some people think washing their hair with shampoo facilitate dandruff believing that the drying effect of shampoo will worsen their dandruff. On the contrary washing the hair regularly, removes dead skin before it can build up into larger, more noticeable flakes. Using acid-based shampoos helps restore acidity to the scalp; this prevents dead skin cells. The shampoos with dilute medication, or those shampoos that do not are not marked to treat seborrhic dermatitis (a skin disorder), may not have any effect on the redness and irritation which comes with dandruff.
Some shampoos are specifically designed to combat dandruff and are easily available, most of them are made up of zinc pyrithione. Another effective anti-dandruff agent is selenium sulfide shampoos containing this product can also be used. Apart from these chemical based products there are products containing wood tar; and various generic products with the same active ingredients. For cases of severe dandruff, as well as dandruff due to seborrhoeic dermatitis, shampoo containing 1% or 2% ketoconazole, can be used. These anti-dandruff ingredients are either fungicides, which kill the Malassezia furfur fungus, or they act as lowers the oils on your scalp that lead to visible chunks of dead skin flakes.
