Baking Soda and
Acne
Most acne sufferers are unaware of strong
healing properties of baking soda. It works wonders and you
also may get cured from traumatic and chronic acne by using
this amazing natural grocery substance.
Sodium bicarbonate is the alternative chemical name for baking soda which is crystalline powder used for leaving foods stuffs like cake, breads and many bakery items. It produces carbon dioxide when it reacts with acidic substances in certain foods. It works in two ways:
- Exfoliating Agent
- Neutralization of acidic environment
Exfoliating Agent – Exfoliation is the process of scrubbing the skin with fine particles to remove dirt, sloughed-off skin cells, germs, excessive sebum and other substances from tiny hair follicles. Blocked hair follicles is the foremost cause of acne breakouts. When follicles are blocked and sebum is being continuously produced excessively, it exerts pressure on walls of hair follicles and rupture them. When hair follicles rupture, sebum and pus inside the follicles spreads up to other skin layers and blood capillaries. Therefore, regular exfoliation is one of the many solutions for treating and preventing acne. Regular exfoliation keeps skin pores unclogged and sebum freely keeps on discharging without interruption, reducing the risk of whiteheads, blackheads and pustules.
Neutralization of acidic environment – Your body requires optimum acidic and optimum alkaline environment for normal function and healthy growth. PH level at 6 or below 6 indicates acidic environment, while pH level from 7 to 14 is indication of alkaline environment being 14 is the most favorable. In certain circumstances, acidly increases in your body specially when you eat junk foods, milk, red meat and other substances. Kidneys remove acidity from your blood, but in case, there is excessive acidly, it get discharge from skin. At this point your skin develops acne breakouts. Baking soda is helpful at this juncture. It normalizes the increase pH level in your body. It is one of the most effective way for preventing acne breakouts.
Using baking soda is safe if it is used properly in a specific amount. Side effects are rare and most people are now using it as an organic remedy. You can also use it, but if you are allergic to certain substances or have had bad history of allergy, do not use it unless you consult your health care professional.
t can be used both orally and topically. Oral use of baking soda in its real form is rare and I recommend not take it raw form. Eat substances that contains backing soda as it is safe and effective. But if your health care professional allows your to take it in raw form, you can take it.
You can also use it topically on acne lesions. Mix small amount of baking soda in water to make paste of it. Apply the paste twice or thrice a day on lesions regularly. Do not squeeze the pimple, apply it gently. You can also massage the skin with its paste for exfoliation.
